Several years ago the Lord directed Northside’s Lead Pastor to begin giving away 50% of all the General income that comes to the Church.
So anything that is “overthewall”, as Jacob said to his son, Joseph, has become a priority. The heart of the Word of God is to get our eyes off of ourselves and on to the needs of others, and in doing so, not only receive the blessings of prosperity that attend generosity, but also receive healing in our spirit, soul and body. … give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you. Luke 6:38 ESV
In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ Acts 20:35 ESV
As God said to Abraham and his descendants, which includes all believers, We are blessed to be a blessing. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Genesis 12:2-3a ESV
The Apostle Paul, days before he died, repeated the concept to his disciple Timothy. Pass it on! … and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 2 Timothy 2:2 ESV
The mathematics are simple. If I give away what I’ve received from Jesus to three people in 3 years, then we have 4 of us. If those 3 pass it in to 3 more in 3 years, there are 13 of us. Repeat the process a few more times and in one lifetime we would be able to pass the blessing on to the entire population of the world.
Thinking through what we’ve just read and applying it to our Northside Church, we have a responsibility to pass on what we’ve been given. For example, if we give $4000 to plant one church with an indigenous pastor, in an unreached village of Africa (our focus is on Ethiopia, Sudan and Uganda) that $4000 translates into about an average of 80 souls within 2 years. Last year we sponsored 60 new church plants so that results in 60 times 80, which equals 4800 new believers. One church planted 4 years ago in Uganda has now planted 30 more churches on their own in nearby villages. How much better is that than spending that $4000 on ourselves!
