A Glimpse into the Courtroom of Heaven

July 15, 2018 | Pastor Barry Buzza

Big Idea: There are two worlds, the visible and the invisible. Most of the real action takes place in the invisible world. When Jesus died on the cross in our place, an amazing transfer took place in Heaven, that reversed the curse on our world.

Introduction. All of history hung in the balance on that day in 33 AD. God had had come down to earth and fulfilled the plan he’d had since Adam and Eve dropped the ball and lost our inheritance as sons and daughters of God. Jesus Christ took our sins and nailed them to his cross. He was the victor over evil and death, but sadly, the King was dead!

But the rightful King was now dead.

The cross has granted us forgiveness, but our Saviour was dead and gone to hades. What good is a dead King?

Can you picture the hoards of Hades piled on Jesus trying desperately to hold Him down? The devil yelling, “Don’t let Him go!” But it was impossible to hold Him back. A crescendo began to build. When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades. Revelation 1:17-18

But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power. Acts 2:24

“He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” Luke 24:6-7 NASB

After His resurrection an amazing transfer took place.

I don’t know why, except that He really does love us and has an eternal purpose for our lives, but He handed us back the keys to the Kingdom and reappointed us as co-rulers with Him forever! How can we help but love Him? And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood—and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. Revelation 1:5-6

Back where we began in Genesis 1:26 – co-rulers with Jesus

Revelation 5 tells the awesome story of the redemption of mankind to our original state as co-rulers with Him. Of course, John could not help but join the angelic chorus in singing,

Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll (think of the scroll as the legal title deed to planet earth) written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it.

And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.” And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints

And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are You to take the book (the title deed to planet earth) and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth. Revelation 5:1-10

The response is up to us.

All this happened in the heavens. God has completed the transfer, but like a will that has been made, after that person dies, the recipient has to actually receive what has been promised. We have a choice to receive the free gift of eternal life or to leave it on the table. It’s up to each of us now.
