Finding Destiny in Disappointment

Joel Conti June 5, 2018 Standalone

Main Point:  God does His best work in the deep and dark place of disappointment

2 Corinthians 12:9

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

  • Jesus says, “my will” is to do “His will”

John 6:38

“For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.”

  • Jesus Himself is saying: “in my weakness,” I am made strong

  • REDEMPTION flows through the valley of REJECTION

1 Peter 2:4-7

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.  For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”

  • The rejected stone is God’s cornerstone

1 Peter 2: 9-10

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

  • You are chosen: that means you have a specific purpose
  • You are purchased: you are ‘His own possession’
  • You are redeemed: you are constantly ‘made new’

Genesis 37:7

“Listen to this dream…we were out in a field, tying up bundles of grain. Suddenly my bundle stood up, and your bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine”

Genesis 37:9

“Listen, I have had another dream…the sun, moon and eleven stars bowed low before me”

  • PIT of PAIN became a PIT OF PROMISE.

Joseph was rejected by man but he was planted by God

Genesis 39: 2-4 (NLT)

“The Lord was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. Potiphar noticed this and realized that the Lord was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did. This please Potiphar, so he soon made Joseph his personal assistant. He put him in charge of his entire household and everything he owned.”

Genesis 39:21-23 (NLT)

“But the Lord was with Joseph in the prison and showed him His faithful love. And the Lord made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden. Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison. The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The Lord was with him and caused everything he did to succeed.”

Your greatest setback will become your greatest comeback

A downgrade to the world is an upgrade to God

 Genesis 41:38b-43

“Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God? Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has shown you all this, there is none so discerning and wise as you are.  You shall be over my house, and all my people shall order themselves as you command. Only as regards the throne will I be greater than you.” And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.” Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain about his neck. And he made him ride in his second chariot. And they called out before him, “Bow the knee!” Thus he set him over all the land of Egypt.

  • Like Joseph…he uses the moments in our life when we feel PLANTED IN A PIT and makes us feel PLANTED IN PURPOSE
  • Joseph endures a few pits in his life and each one is soil for him to grow in
