Flame of Love
March 3, 2019 | Pastor Joel Conti

Main Point:  Our love for God is like a flame; it can be extinguished or enhanced based on the way we live.

God is Love
“God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.  This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus.  There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”
1 John 4:16b-18 (NIV)

  • What does it mean to live in love? Live in a constant awareness of three loves:
    • Love for God
    • His love for you
    • Your love for others

Born for Relationship

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1 (NIV)

  • Our mind can become anxious and fearful because it longs to think on God
    • Our mind isn’t evil, it reacts to what it is fed
  • Our emotions can become negative because they were created to be poured out on Him
    • Emotion isn’t evil, it reacts to what is in our mind
  • Our will can be uncontrollable because it was created to be used by Him
    • Our will isn’t evil, it reacts to what is in our Mind and what is passed through our emotions

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.  Love the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  These commandments that I give you today are to be on
your hearts.  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when
you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind
them on your foreheads.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (NIV)

  • The commandments must be “on your heart”- this means that we must internalize what God says
  • We love God by internalizing His Word

Keep Falling in Love with God
To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of Him who holds the seven stars in His right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. I know your deeds, your labor, and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate those who are evil, and you have tested and exposed as liars those who falsely claim to be apostles.  Without growing weary, you have persevered and endured many things for the sake of My name. But I have this against you: You have abandoned your first love.”  Revelation 2:1-4 (BSB)

  • I know your deeds, labor and perseverance

BUT

  • You have abandoned your first love

Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.”  Revelation 2:5 (NIV)

  • You can FALL INTO LOVE and you can FALL OUT OF LOVE…the way to FALL BACK INTO LOVE WITH GOD IS REPENTANCE
  • Sin has a way of POURING WATER ON THE FLAME OF REVELATION
  • Repentance is the way to POUR GASOLINE ON THE FLAME OF REVELATION
  • Even in the Old Testament, God told the priests, ‘do not let the fire on the altar go out, it must be kept burning continuously’ (Lev 6:13)

“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” Romans 12:11

  • Zeal: diligence, ongoing enthusiasm
  • Spiritual Fervor: Literally means to “boil in spirit”

Conclusion:  God will never abandon His love for us. We must respond to His unconditional love for us by fanning into flame our love for Him
