Inconvenient Evangelism

Joel Conti December 2, 2018 Standalone

Main Point: Sharing the gospel with people is always inconvenient but then again, childbirth is always inconvenient. It is my purpose as a follower of Jesus to invite people to encounter Him and be Born Again.

  • People can’t come to the wedding if you don’t send out the invitation.

Matthew 4:18- ‘Peter and Andrew were fishing when Jesus called them. They were literally at work and they dropped everything to follow Jesus’

Matthew 19:29- ‘whoever leaves their family for my sake with inherit eternal life’

  • Jesus calls us to a life of inconvenience, for the sake of following Him
  • Jesus was inconvenienced for others
  • Every new birth involves INCONVENIENCE
  • You cannot be Born Again without inconvenience

The Inconvenience of Evangelism

John 3:1,2 – (NLT) “There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.”

  • Nicodemus came AT NIGHT- Jesus is sitting down to watch his favourite Netflix show and knock, knock, knock-
  • He thought to himself, “well this is inconvenient!” I am done with ministry for the day, the office is closed, Jesus wants to sit down for a little R and R

Be Fully Born Again

God’s goal for you is that you would taste and see the Kingdom of God, not observe from the other side of the Jordan River

John 3:3- “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God”

  • But to see, you must be born again – there is something powerful about being born again that causes us to see with our spiritual eyes into the Kingdom of God
  • Do you know where the Kingdom of God is?? All around you- do you see it?
  • You are actually in it!
  • Jesus is saying to Nicodemus, “when you are born again, your entire worldview changes!”

“To be in Christ, that makes you fit for Heaven; but for Christ to be in you- that makes you fit for earth! To be in Christ- that changes your destination; but for Christ to be in you- that changes your destiny. The one makes Heaven your home- the other makes this world His workshop” Pg. 20 (The Saving Life of Christ- Thomas)

  • To be in Christ is Salvation but for Christ to be in you is Salvation for the World

John 3:4 – “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus, “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”

John 3:5,6 – “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.”

  • Today, we have had a baptism in water and that is for repentance
  • Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a baptism of fire
  • One baptism signifies our DESTINATION while the other signifies our DESTINY

Available Evangelism

Acts 8:26 (ESV) – “An angel of the Lord said to him, “Go south down the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” …” Are you available to do the inconvenient for the sake of the gospel?

Acts 8:27-30 ESV – “And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?”

  • Often, male servants to queens were castrated to keep them from sexual desires for the queen
  • I mean, talk about inconvenient

Acts 8:31-33 – And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. Now the passage of the Scripture that He was reading was this: “Like a sheep He was led to the slaughter and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so He opens his mouth. In His humiliation justice was denied Him.” – Isaiah 53 (700 years before Jesus)

Acts 8:34 – “About whom I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or someone else? Then Philip opened his mouth and told him the good news about Jesus”

Acts 8:36 ‘Philip and the Eunuch go along the road and the Eunuch sees water and wants to be baptized…immediately after being baptized, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing’

  • Long text but here is the lesson: God will often use us when it is INCONVENIENT FOR US because it is CONVENIENT FOR OTHERS
  • Notice that it doesn’t say, ‘Philip was disgusted because of the man’s changed sexuality’
  • Maybe I am not ready to be INCONVENIENCED…can I be available at least? If I cannot be INCONVENIENCED or AVAILABLE, I’m not sure I am fully born again

Evangelism is about an INVITATION, not an IDEOLOGY

  • Evangelism is not about trying to convince people to believe a series of doctrinal statements, we are trying to invite people to a wedding… “their own wedding”
  • If they don’t RSVP, don’t be upset…your job is to pray and invite
  • Salvation is a wedding…an opportunity for every person to “put on a pure white dress” and ‘dance the night away’ with Jesus, their groom!
