Joyfully Advancing

Joel Conti July 21, 2019

Main Point: Joyfully advancing the gospel comes from dying to yourself and working out your salvation with fear and trembling.

Joyfully Advancing the Gospel
“Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains FOR CHRIST. Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.” Philippians 1:12-14 NIV

Joyfully Dying to the Flesh
“I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Philippians 1: 20-21 NIV

• Talking to people about Jesus can be difficult. The reason for this is that we haven’t completely died to our flesh.
• As you die to the flesh, you awaken the Spirit- ‘creation is waiting for you to wake up’

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.” Romans 8:18,19 NIV
“I know through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance” Philippians 1:19 NIV

• Prayer will help you live in the Spirit
• “I KNOW” that what happened to me will turn out for my deliverance-
• Paul lives by the Spirit and that is how HE KNOWS that this is a GOOD WORK
• Without spirit, relationships become transactional

Having a Christlike Attitude
• Joyfully Advancing the Gospel means “adjusting my attitude”

“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
Who, being in the very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death- even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:5-11 NIV

“Don’t try to be God, be a servant to all, die for Jesus and then get your trophy in Heaven”

• Our calling, like Jesus, is to reconcile the world to God.

Stop Counting Sins
“All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”
2 Corinthians 5:18-21 NIV

• Joyfully Advancing the Gospel means “stop counting”

Work out your Salvation
“Work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose”
Philippians 2:12b-13 NIV

• Joyfully Advancing the Gospel means “working out your salvation”
• Again, the world isn’t “working out their salvation,” the church is… Paul is saying “put your salvation to work”
• “Put your salvation to work”- the ministry of reconciliation otherwise known as evangelism is “putting your salvation to work”

Press On and Take Hold
• Joyfully Advancing the Gospel is to Take Hold of ALL THAT GOD HAS FOR YOU

“I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus”.
Philippians 3:12b-14 NIV

• Press on and run your unique race
• This is what Paul understood, sitting in a Roman prison writing to a Roman Colony in a Greek city
• This is why Paul could say ‘to live is Christ and to die is gain’
• This is why Jesus could become a servant to all and die on a cross
• They both understood ‘their race’
• What is my race? What is my calling?

Conclusion: Finding your calling in the Kingdom of God might be volunteering in ministry at Northside Church or delivering pizza or going to the mission field or working in full time ministry but it’s something beautiful. It is the very thing that you are willing to sacrifice everything to do…He will lead you to it but if you find it, don’t wait! Work it out with fear and trembling!
