Living A Joyful Life

Joel Conti July 14, 2019 Standalone

Main Point: Joy is contentment, not emotion. Paul teaches us that with Christ, we are able to be content in any situation

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”
Philippians 4:4 NIV

Joyful Endurance

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1-3 NIV

Surrounded by a Cloud

  • People help us THROW OFF HINDERANCES
  • People help us THROW OFF SIN THAT ENTANGLES
  • People help us RUN WITH PERSEVERANCE

Joyful Prayer

“In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” Philippians 1: 4 NIV

  • If you define joy as “the prize at the end of an enduring race,” you can “choose joy”
  • I have noticed in my own life is that when I understand the enduring race ‘toward joy’ I actually experience more emotional peace and emotional joy

Joyful Jeremiah

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations” Jeremiah 1:5 NIV

  • We have judgment throughout the book of Jeremiah against Judah and God’s people but in the middle of God’s judgment, we have Jeremiah 30-33
  • These chapters are the promise of RESTORATION
  • I like to think of these chapters as the JOY in the middle of the PRISON OF UNCERTAINTY

“The people who survive the sword will find favor in the desert; I will come to give rest to Israel.” Jeremiah 31:2 NIV

“Sing with joy for Jacob…I will gather them from the ends of the earth” Jeremiah 31:7a, 8a NIV

“I will turn their mourning in gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow” Jeremiah 31:13 NIV

  • Constantly we see this phrase ‘I WILL’
  • There is a joyful contentment in knowing that HE WILL!

Promises in Prison

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know” Jeremiah 33:3 NIV

  • If you are in prison this morning, call to him…He will answer you
and tell you great and unsearchable things

“I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security. I will bring Judah and Israel back from captivity and will rebuild them as they were before. I will cleanse them from all the sin they have committed against me and
will forgive all their sins of rebellion against me.”
Jeremiah 33: 6-9 NIV

Conclusion: Jesus didn’t ENJOY the cross, He ENDURED the cross to pursue the prize: JOY
