Our Teacher Gives Us Tests

Barry Buzza February 4, 2018 The Kingdom of God

Big Idea: Just as our school teachers give us tests to both, promote study and also to measure what we’ve learned, God tests us as we prepare for our ultimate assignment of rulership.

Scriptures: Do you remember when God asked Abraham to sacrifice his only son, Isaac? He was testing him, like any good teacher, to see if he was ready to be the Father of Faith. Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” Genesis 22:1 NASB

And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. Isaiah 30:20-21 ESV

Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation (test) has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the test, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:12c-13 ESV

Adam and Eve were tested to see what they’d learned

In the story of our parents, Adam and Eve, there was a test to see if they would lead their family in Kingdom authority. Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. Genesis 3:1 NASB

The word translated “serpent’ is the Hebrew word “nachash” which is rooted in the idea, “the shining one”. Satan’s name in Heaven was Lucifer, “the morning star”.

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, (Morning Star) son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: Isaiah 14:12-13 KJV

The devil in disguise

Remember the two disguises that the devil uses are a roaring lion and a shining angel. In the story of Adam and Eve, he chose to use the Shining Angel costume.

No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
2 Corinthians 11:14 NASB

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8 NASB

Now the serpent (the shining one) was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”
But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:1-5 ESV

They failed their first test
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Genesis 3:6 ESV

Three areas of testing.
1. Desires of the flesh
2. Desires of the eyes
3. Pride of life

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life —is not from the Father but is from the world. 1 John 2:15-16 ESV

Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. Genesis 3:1-7 ESV
This was the first cover-up; they put on a facade.

Application: We’ll each be tested this week. Our Teacher is also our Counsellor, our Helper, our Strength, our Advocate and our Friend. He will be with us throughout the test to help us pass and stay strong on the Path of Life.
