What do you have in your hands?
Big Idea: The Blessings of Generosity begin with what is in your hands. When we release what we have been given, from our grasp, it becomes
seeds for reproduction.
Scriptures: Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:38 ESV The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they ad no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead f hem. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things. And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” But he answered hem, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. So, they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. And taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men. Mark 6:30-44 ESV Observations of the time and setting of this miracle: The miracle was recorded by each of the four Gospel Writers. It happened after the twelve Apostles had gone out two by two preaching the Kingdom message. It took place in a desolate place on the North end of the Sea of Galilee. The disciples and Jesus were exhausted. It happened in the evening. There were probably 12 to 15,000 people there. Jesus’ motive was to test his disciples to see if they understood the Kingdom Principle of Giving and receiving. Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. The Story: The disciples ere tired and not feeling too hospitable. They wanted the people to go away. Jesus was also tired, but saw this as an ideal opportunity to test his disciples, and at the same time, meet the need of the people. He aid to them, “You give them something to eat.” Philip responded. “We have nothing. Buying enough food to feed thousands of people is out of the realm of possibility.” (Philip was failing the test) He said, “Go and see what’s available. Check it out!” He asked them. “What do you have in your hands?” Andrew answered, “There’s a little boy here who has his lunch!” (Credos to both Andrew and the little boy – they both passed he test!) Jesus blessed the bag lunch and broke it into 12 pieces. He handed some to each disciple and told them to pass it out to about a thousand people each. As they gave what was in their hands, the blessing was released. It multiplied in their hands. The people were filled, as were the boy and the disciples, and there was lots left over. The Secret of Happiness (This Circle can be repeated indefinitely unless we abort the process by either not being thankful, or failing to release the seed. If we eat the seed, the cycle ends
The cycle of blessing goes like this:
- We are blessed by God
- We express thankfulness to God for his mercies.
- We receive his blessings and set aside a portion as seed.
- We return the seed by releasing it and planting it in good soil.
- It grows and multiplies 30, 60 or 100 times for sowing again.
- We express our thankfulness to God.
- We keep a portion and release the rest as seed …
