Big Idea: In all four of the Gospels, we read a clear command of Jesus to, “Go into all the world and proclaim
the gospel to the whole creation”.
The action word, “go” is in the Bible about 1400 times, but today we’ll focus on seven times when God-followers were given the command to go, each with a slightly variant circumstance.
Isaiah – “Even though you are young, go”. And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” And he said, “Go, and say to this people. Isaiah 6:8-10 ESV
Abraham – “Go and leave your ethnic roots”. Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonours you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Genesis 12:1-3 ESV
Moses – “Go and confront the King.” Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Let my people go, that they may serve me”. Exodus 8:1 ESV
The demoniac of Gederenes – “Go back to your own people.” “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” Mark 5:19 ESV
Servants of the King – “Go and invite everyone you see to the Feast” “Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. Matthew 22:9-10 ESV
Philip – “Go, I have a divine appointment for you.” “Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians,…” Acts 8:26-27 ESV
Every Follower of Jesus – “Go in the power of the Holy Spirit”. And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs. Mark 16:15-20 ESV
Application: Of course, it is not possible that we all physically go overseas to other nations, but we each have a field ripe and ready for harvest right around us. I love what the Founder of our Foursquare Church, Aimee Semple McPherson, said, “If you cannot go yourself, then give the money to help support someone who can and will go.”
And here’s the good news to us. Jesus promised. “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20 ESV
