Main Point: The manifestation gifts of the Holy Spirit operate in the church today to show God’s presence and demonstrate God’s power.
Luke 24:49 NIV
49 “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
1 Corinthians 12:1-3 ESV
1 “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.”
- The gifts of the Holy Spirit are a way that God ‘empowers’ a human being to display the power of God.
1 Corinthians 12:4-7 ESV
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
- I want Northside to be a place for the gifts of the Holy Spirit to flow naturally supernatural…a place that is safe for people to learn about the gifts of the Holy Spirit and a place that is safe for people to be used by God in the gifts of the Holy Spirit
1 Corinthians 12:8-11 ESV
8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
- Word of Wisdom
- Word of Knowledge
- Gifts of Healing
- Working of Miracles
- Ability to distinguish between spirits
- Various kinds of tongues
- Interpretation of tongues
- 6 Prophetic Gifts: “Wisdom, knowledge, prophecy, distinguishing spirits, tongues, and interpretation of tongues” gifts of the Holy Spirit which I will call “prophetic gifts.”
- 3 Power Gifts: faith, healing, and working of miracles which I will call “power gifts.”
1 Corinthians 14:5 NIV
5 “I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy.”
- Prophetic Gifts have 3 areas of focus which are usually steps for applying to our life.
- Revelation: what is God showing, saying, doing?
- Interpretation: what does it mean?
- Application: what do I do?
Word of Wisdom
Judges 7: 1-8 NIV
8 “Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh. 2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me.’ 3 Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’ ” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there.
If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.” 5 So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.” 6 Three hundred of them drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink. 7 The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the others go home.” 8 So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites home but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others.”
- Word of Wisdom is “what is the wisdom of the Lord” in this situation
- A Word of Wisdom is “applied knowledge” which is from the Holy Spirit
Word of Knowledge
John 1:40-51 NIV
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter). 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip. 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” 48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” 50 Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”
- Words of Knowledge: Information is Revelation, Revelation leads to Interpretation, Interpretation leads to Application, Application leads to Transformation.
Conclusion: Prophetic gifts such as Words of Knowledge and Words of Wisdom are a demonstration of God’s power and that He speaks to us today. In every Word of Knowledge and Word of Wisdom, information becomes a demonstration of the power of the Holy Spirit.
