Main Point: The outpouring of the Holy Spirit initiated the Church Age, which is the age we currently live in. The Holy Spirit is poured out to empower the church for ministry.

New Power for a New Assignment

Luke 24:48-49

48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

Acts 1:4-5

On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

  • But what does this new church age mean? What does the baptism with the Holy Spirit mean? Why was it necessary that He come?

A New Heart and a New Spirit

Isaiah 44:3

“For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.”

Ezekiel 36:25-27

25”I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.”

  • The outpouring of the Holy Spirit has an effect on the people of God- this effect is prophesied in Joel 2 and fulfilled in Acts 1,2

“Everybody Gets to Play”

Joel 2:28-29

28 “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

  • Isaiah, Ezekiel, Joel, and Jesus all repeat the same sentiment: When the Holy Spirit is poured out there will be evident power released!
  • Be open to His power and receive the empowerment that comes, but let it be genuine.

Acts 1:6-8

Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Everybody Gets Filled

Acts 2:1-3

“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

  • This day of Pentecost would be an ushering in of God’s new covenant to ‘pour out His Holy Spirit upon all flesh.’

Conclusion: As John Wimber says, “everybody gets to play.” We are inviting every person that desires to be filled with the Holy Spirit for the first time or the fiftieth time, to come forward to be prayed over.
