Blessed to be a Blessing
Big Idea: As every church has, we’ve been chosen by God to accomplish a divine mission. God has called Northside Church to a place of generosity aimed at Kingdom expansion.
Scripture: “Joseph is a fruitful bough, A fruitful bough by a spring; Its branches run over a wall.
Genesis 49:22 NASB
1. Every church, just like every person, has a divine assignment with gifts to match.
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:1-2 NASB
For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
Romans 12:4-5 NASB
2. The overall assignment has been given to the Church as a whole. Jacob, the grandson of Abraham, was surprised by a visit from Jesus through a spiritual dream.
“Your descendants will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families (ethnic groups) of the earth be blessed. “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
Genesis 28:14-15 NASB
3. Both Jesus and the Apostle Paul explained that the Church today has been given the same assignment. We’ve been blessed to be a blessing to others.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 NASB
The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.” So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer …. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.
Galatians 3:8-9 & 28-29 NASB
4. The assignment can be summarized in three words. “KNOW, GROW AND SOW’.
“Joseph is a fruitful bough, A fruitful bough by a spring; Its branches run over a wall. “The archers bitterly attacked him, And shot at him and harassed him; But his bow remained firm, And his arms were agile, From the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob (From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel), From the God of your father who helps you, And by the Almighty who blesses you With blessings of heaven above, Blessings of the deep that lies beneath, Blessings of the breasts and of the womb. “The blessings of your father Have surpassed the blessings of my ancestors Up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills; May they be on the head of Joseph, Genesis 49:22-26a
5. There’s a circle to life.
God supplies everything we need; we have been blessed so that we can be a blessing to others; we give generously to plant seeds in fertile ground; (when we stop the cycle at any point, we abort the process); when we give generously, there is a fulfillment that follows, and that leads to an attitude of thanks giving: with that, the blessings from God continue and overflow; and so on and so on.
As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”
Matthew 13:23 ESV
Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food
will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness; you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing through many thanksgivings to God …Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift! 2 Corinthians 9:10-15 NASB
