Big Idea: We were created to season every environment that we find ourselves in

Covenant of Thanksgiving

The Old Testament talks about a Salt Covenant on 3 occasions…this is important to paint a good exegetical picture for looking at it in the New Testament.

Thanksgiving: Grain offering is an offering of thanksgiving

“Season all your grain offerings with salt. Do not leave the salt of the covenant of your God out of your grain offerings; add salt to all your offerings”  Leviticus 2:13 NIV

  • Every offering of thanksgiving is seasoned or flavoured with salt, representing the eternal nature of God’s promises

Covenant of Blessing

Blessing: salt covenant is a covenant of blessing on those who serve in the House of the Lord

“Whatever is set aside from the holy offerings the Israelites present to the Lord I give to you and your sons and daughters as your regular share. It is an everlasting covenant of salt before the Lord for both you and your offspring”  Numbers 18:19 NIV

  • Within the animal sacrifice, there was a SALT COVENANT for those serving in ministry

Covenant of Responsibility

Responsibility: salt covenant is an everlasting “kingdom agreement” for God’s people

“Don’t you know that the Lord, the God of Israel, has given the kingship of Israel to David and his descendants forever by a covenant of salt”  2 Chronicles 13:5 NIV

  • This means that ruler-ship was promised to the Davidic line

Within the Salt Covenant we have these 3 key points to tuck in the back of our mind

  1. Thanksgiving: Remember the sacrifice and be thankful for everything
  2. Blessing: the priest and his household is blessed with enjoying the “anointed” offering and this is included in the covenant of salt
  3. Responsibility: Kingship is established by a covenant of salt

You Are Salt of the Earth

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5: 13-16 NIV

  • Diluted Salt cannot preserve, flavour or enhance

You are Chosen, Royal, Holy and Special

But you (the Church) are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9 NIV

  • He says, ‘you are my special possession, a chosen people…you are my salt, now season the environment you are in
  • This verse shouts to me of “responsibility”
  • I am called to be a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession…and I have trouble getting through each week (unacceptable)

You are Responsible for your Environment

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven”  Matthew 5:16

“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm”
Proverbs 13:20 NIV

“One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbour, but the way of the wicked leads them astray”  Proverbs 12:26

  • You are wise…you are a guide…it’s in your spiritual DNA
