Big Idea: God creates life with his words. We were created in God’s image, so our words carry creative power.

Scripture: From the fruit of a man’s mouth his stomach is satisfied; he is satisfied by the yield of his lips. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
Proverbs 18:20-21 ESV

God creates life with words

 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Genesis 1:3 ESV

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:26-27 ESV

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:1-5 ESV

When our words line up with God’s words, life is produced

So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.  … I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.  John 5:19,30 ESV

The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones.  And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry.  And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.  Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live.  And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”  Ezekiel 37:1-6 ESV

Let my cry come before you, O Lord;
Give me understanding according to your word!
Let my plea come before you;
Deliver me according to your word.
My lips will pour forth praise, for you teach me your statutes.
My tongue will sing of your word,For all your commandments are right.
Psalms 119:169-172 ESV

A Prayer to say every day

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight,O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. Psalms 19:14 ESV

O Lord, I call upon you; hasten to me!
Give ear to my voice when I call to you!
Let my prayer be counted as incense before you,
And the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!
Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;
Keep watch over the door of my lips!
Do not let my heart incline to any evil,
Psalms 141:1-4 ESV
