Main Point: Building your spiritual life has critical stages that cannot be ignored or sped up; neglect will lead to a powerless Christian walk

The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” Proverbs 21:5 NIV

  • Building a structure is similar to “spiritual formation;” the lifelong pursuit of “spiritual discipline”
  • I am all for breakthrough in a moment but this discipline I am speaking of today requires a great deal of diligence

            A. What is your vision?

  • Your vision will lead to a steady spiritual growth
  • Lack of vision will lead to a steady spiritual decline

            B. Are you pursuing comfort or growth?

Major Ian Thomas says:
“Being filled with the Holy Spirit means that God is in you and that means the origin of His own image, the source of His own activity, the dynamic of His own demands and the cause of His own effect is in you”

  • Comfort says, ‘I’m just living for Jesus to the best of my ability’- this requires no faith
  • Growth says, ‘I’m just dying for Jesus so He would live through me’- this requires faith

Faith activates His Ability

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. Proverbs 16:3 NLT

There are 4 Critical Stages of Construction in your Spiritual Life:

  1. Vision
  2. Foundation
  3. Structure
  4. Roof

In Him the whole building is fitted together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord. And in Him you too are being built together into a dwelling place for God in His Spirit.” Ephesians 2:21-22 BSB

  1. The first aspect of your spiritual life that drives the other 3 stages of your spiritual life is: Vision

  • Why do you exist as a follower of Jesus?

Thomas says that “We are ‘human vehicles’ for ‘divine activity’” – that is a vision statement

My vision is Matthew 10:6-8
“Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel
“As you go, preach this message: The kingdom of Heaven is near
“Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. Matthew 10:6-8 NIV

FAITH for the IMPOSSIBLE- Faith is the fuel that moves the human vehicle for divine activity

  1. Foundation of Faith- this is critical to ‘bear the weight’ of everything you build

“With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of His calling, and that by His power He may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 NIV

  • Two kinds of Faith:
    • Personal Salvation: to believe in Jesus Christ as the Saviour of the world
    • Personal Commissioning: to allow His power to flow through you
  • You see, God’s power is activated by faith- He wants to fulfill EVERY ACT… PROMPTED BY FAITH
  1. Structure of Scripture- this must surround everything you learn and live
  • From this foundation of faith, I now build the walls, the structure that surrounds everything that is inside my spiritual building
  • Scripture provides boundaries for my spirituality…it marks out “what goes where!”
  • Scripture then, is not a textbook, it’s a guidebook

“Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path”- Psalm 119:105 NIV

  1. Roof is Relationship- a roof protects what is built
  • Relationship protects everything- it protects the foundation of faith and it protects the structure of scripture
  • Relationship will protect me from becoming RELIGIOUS

Conclusion: questions and thoughts to ponder this week

  1. What is your Vision?
  2. Are you pursuing comfort or construction?
  3. Foundation of Faith- this is critical to ‘bear the weight’ of everything you build
  4. Structure of Scripture- this must surround everything you learn and live
  5. Roof is Relationship- this must protect what you have built
