Big Idea: There is one unforgivable sin mentioned in the Bible and today we will discuss what it is and how to avoid it.

“And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.” And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.” And he called them to him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house. “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness but is guilty of an eternal sin”— for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
Mark 3:21-30 ESV

Context is Critical

Parable: an illustration meant to teach a lesson

Jesus said to them in parables: “How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to standMark 3: 23-25 ESV

Two things to remember when it comes to context:

  • Jesus is speaking in a parable
  • Jesus is operating under the power of the Holy Spirit in Healing and Deliverance

Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw” Matthew 12: 22 ESV

  • The man was HEALED and DELIVERED-
  • A house divided cannot stand- a family, team, army, organization, band, or couple divided cannot survive (this is the meaning of a parable- an illustration that tells a point)
  • This parable Jesus is talking about is absolutely referring to healing and deliverance ministry because that is the surrounding context for the truth

Who is the Strong Man?

But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house” Mark 3:27 ESV

  • Jesus is saying “I have bound the strong man”
  • Jesus is declaring that the STRONG MAN, named Satan, IS BOUND
  • Through HEALING and DELIVERANCE (the context of this verse), Jesus is robbing Satan’s kingdom and setting people free

An Unforgiveable Sin?

“Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.Mark 3:28-30 ESV

Matthew adds further clarification:

And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.”  Matthew 12:32 ESV

Two things to remember when it comes to context:

  • Jesus is speaking in a parable
  • Jesus is operating under the power of the Holy Spirit in Healing and Deliverance

The SIN JESUS IS REFERRING TO: Attributing the work of the Holy Spirit to an evil spirit

“He said this because they were saying, He has an unclean spirit”

  • Mark highlights the REASON that Jesus said this sin was unforgiveable
  • In other words, Jesus spells out that BLASPHEMING THE HOLY SPIRIT is “calling a work of the Holy Spirit a work of an evil spirit”

“And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.”  Matthew 12:32 ESV

  • You may deny Jesus and be forgiven but you may not deny the Holy Spirit
  • Jesus is saying, if you say that the work of the Holy Spirit is the work of an evil spirit, you will not be forgiven

3 areas to assess in your own life, regarding the work of the Holy Spirit:

  1. Conviction
  2. Gifts
  3. Fruit

The Lord also told me that there is an “open door” this morning for forgiveness in these three areas- in other words, there is an opportunity to repent.

Conviction:
“And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment”
John 16:8 ESV

Gifts:
“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.”
I Corinthians 12:7-11 ESV

Fruit:
“For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.”
Galatians 5: 17 ESV

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
Galatians 5: 22-24 ESV

Conclusion: The work of the Church is the same as the work of Jesus: healing and deliverance is in our job description. I want to pray over these three areas in our lives.
