Main Point: As we begin a new year, we posture our hearts in prayer. The Lord’s prayer provides us with an effect way to connect with God and to unlock great power in prayer.

Ephesians 6:18

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Matthew 6:9-15

“This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.’ 14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Fast and Pray

Nehemiah 1:4

When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.

Nehemiah’s fasting included 3 very powerful postures, and this is what I hope for this week in our week of prayer and fasting

  1. Reminding ourselves that God’s covenant is a covenant of love

2. Confessing our sins and the sins of our community.

3. Seeking to Hear God’s voice

Nehemiah 1:5-7

5 “Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you. We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.

Nehemiah 1:11

11 Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.” I was cupbearer to the king.

Conclusion: While there are no strict rules for the words we pray, the Lord’s prayer reveals a posture and a pattern that we can follow.

As we seek the heart of our Father in heaven, I pray for a genuine repentance to flow through our church. I pray for forgiveness of sins and forgiveness of others to mark us a community. This week, as we gather to pray each day, I am confident that we will hear God’s voice for 2024.
